In Waterloo Region male children wait an average of 2 years to be matched with a Big Brother, 25 children were never matched in the In-School Mentoring program and 75 children are waiting to take part in the Big Bunch program. These are statistics that are common across the country. To address this high need in our community this fall Big Brothers Big Sisters is on a MAN HUNT! We are searching high and low for a minimum of 50 men to help change the lives of children in our community and we have a goal of doing this in 50 short days. Grandiose: Photographic Studies and Contemporary Paintings
Grandiose is an exploration of the Grand River Watershed through the eyes of hometown artist Bill Hagan. Capturing photographic images throughout the Grand River, Hagan uses these images as inspiration and stepping stones in the creation of his Contemporary Landscape Paintings. “The multi-lane and bypass highways that cut across our country have changed the perception of Canadian Landscapes,” states Hagan, “Focusing on these off the beaten path landscapes is my way of encouraging more of us to slow down and learn to appreciate where we live and what we have.” Grandiose is dedicated to capturing the spirit of the Grand, Nith, Speed, Conestogo, and Eramosa Rivers though contemporary painting on canvas, sparking interest in the river system while encouraging viewers to slow down and take the time to get involved in the exploration and conservation of this amazing ecosystem within our own backyard. The Photographic Studies along with Hagan’s Contemporary Paintings will be exhibited at the Edissi Fine Arts Gallery in Kitchener. “Hagan’s paintings beckon us to get back in touch with nature,” states Gillian Flanagan, General Manager of Edissi Fine Arts, “as they capture not only the visual experience of the watershed but a visceral one as well.” The Opening Reception for the exhibition is on Thursday September 9, 2010, from 7 – 9 p.m. at the Edissi Fine Arts Gallery on 907 Frederick Street in Kitchener, ON. Additional Meet the Artist dates are scheduled for Friday September 10, from 12 – 8 p.m. and Saturday September 11, from 12 – 4 p.m. at the Edissi Fine Arts Gallery. Tony is scheduled for surgery September 23rd, 2010, and his family needs $15,000 – $20,000 to help make this a reality. Tony Tavares, born and raised in Kitchener, and a graduate of St. Jerome’s, was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS) in December 2004, three weeks before his second son was born. What started as a limp in his right leg and weakness in his right hand, has now turned into a severely disabling condition which now requires Tony to be in a scooter just to move around. Through your generous donation, you can help Tony get to Mexico for the “Liberation Treatment” for a condition known as chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency (CCSVI), which doctors believe may cause MS or is a result of MS. The “Liberation Treatment” is currently not being performed in Canada. Many people are now starting to have this surgery done in Mexico, India, Bulgaria, and Poland, and there have been some amazing results. An event supported by some local Kitchener firefighters to help raise money for Tony to go to Mexico is also planned for Wednesday, September 15th, 7:00 to 11:00 p.m., at the Whistle Bear Golf Club at 1316 Dixie Settlement Road in Cambridge (south of Hwy 401 off Homer Watson.) The Prey teams leave at 15 minute intervals and must reach 5 checkpoints over about 10k in the fastest time possible. He has currently been in hospital since July 16th and will remain for another week or two given he does not encounter any more complications. This money will help his mom and dad cover the cost of gas, food and any other expenses they might have or his sisters that are at home may have.

Storyboarding is the bridge that gets you safely across the gap between your script to your edit ready footage. An illustrated to do list for your movie, it helps you plan everything, from the title sequence to "The End" making sure you get all the shots you need in between. Storyboarding saves you time, money and aggravation by making you think early in the process about visual story telling. But above all storyboarding will help you make a better movie. This workshop will be an illustrated "how to" with examples my own work and that of other directors, and will include some practical exercises. About the instructor: Isabella Stefanescu is a painter, writer, and new media artist based in Kitchener who received the Ontario arts Council K. M. Hunter Prize for multidisciplinary artists. She was an artist in residence at the Canadian Film Centre Media Lab in 2008, and at the Banff New Media Institute in 2009. This is an open invitation to you to step up and take part in an inspiring, challenging and rewarding event. The Minds in Motion, KW Walking Classic is a race for walkers, in fact it is the only race in Canada that is for walkers only. Race walkers, power walkers, recreational walkers; no matter what your current level of expertise might be, you are welcome to join in the fun. On Sunday September 26 at 9 am the new Public Square in uptown Waterloo will ring with the enthusiastic cheers of walkers as they head out on the race course. You can be part of the action. All you have to do is register on line at our website www.kwwalkingclassic.com, You can choose between walking a 5 km or 10 km distance or if you are up to a real racing challenge register and begin training for our half marathon event (7 am start.) All race participants will receive long sleeve technical shirts and cool finishing medals. Volunteers are also needed to support our event. There are many different opportunities for volunteering available. Consult our website for more details. Our race also promotes mental health through exercise. Research clearly makes the connection between a sense of well being and an active lifestyle. Our fund raising goal with the help of Waterloo Regional Homes for Mental Health is to provide running shoes for those who are are on fixed incomes due to their disabilities and who are using exercise to help them move toward recovery. Our highly successful event last year allowed us to provide over 200 pairs of shoes for these courageous athletes.
